Oakway playon playa

Filed under: Downtown Eugene — luke at 12:22 am on Tuesday, February 5, 2008

The Register Guard reported on Saturday that the Nike store will be moving to Oakway Center. More great news for Oakway!

McKay Investment Company has done a very good job of revitalizing an area that could have easily turned into one big ugly strip mall. Over the past 15 years they have consistently set the bar high through clever deal-making, and by poaching potential merchants from 5th St and elsewhere.

If only the City Council or Mayor could strike those kinds of deals on behalf of Downtown Eugene, the downtown city streets might have more to offer.

The Oakway Center has become a great spot. I worked at US Bank in 1999 in the mall there, and the mall was dying and old. The revitalization has been great, but I also enjoy 5th street.

To me both areas show that there is demand for this type of space, and if more development would occur I believe the developers would be rewarded for their risk.

Sounds like the city planner has a vision and was able to make it happen. I think this position is a key to a community and people really need to find a city planner with the same vision the have for the community. Then keep him happy so he doesn’t move to another town.
